| Abstract | Cesium-137 activity concentrations in sediments from soil erosion plots have been monitored. Two soil erosion plots were established in March 2014 in Tsukidate district, Date city, Fukushima prefecture. One plot reproduced a cultivated farmland and soil was cultivated to the depth of 15 cm for planting soy beans. Another plot reproduced a grassland and soil surface was covered by abundant vegetation. Each erosion plot consisted of an eroding surface with a width of 5 m and a length of 22.13 m, a surface runoff monitoring apparatus at the outlet of the eroding surface, and sediment traps. Samples of sediment and turbid water were collected when they had accumulated in the weir and sediment traps due to antecedent rainfall events. Deposited sediment in weir and Tank 1 were dried and sediment weight (kg) was obtained. Sediment weight (kg) through Tank 1, Tank 2, and Tank 3 were obtained by multiplying suspended sediment concentration of turbid water with surface runoff water volume for each tank. Samples of deposited sediment and suspended sediments were measured for 137Cs activity concentrations (Bq kg−1). Whenever sufficient sediment samples were obtained, we measured their particle size distributions with a laser diffraction particle size analyzer Specific surface areas of sediment samples (m-2 g-1) were calculated based on analysis of particle size distribution. | |
