AbstractThis dataset provides estimated annual mean global fallout deposition of 137Cs from 1945 to 2030, developed to support reproducible numerical simulations of long-term transport and redistribution of radionuclides in the ocean. Global fallout originating from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing was reconstructed using a precipitation-weighted approach, reflecting the dominance of wet deposition processes. The spatial distribution was derived from annual mean precipitation data from the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) with a horizontal resolution of 2.5° x 2.5°. Meridional scaling factors were applied to reproduce the latitudinal distribution of cumulative 137Cs deposition up to 1970, based on observational estimates. Temporal variability was constrained using observed annual 137Cs deposition data at the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI) for the period 1958-2010, while deposition from 1945 to 1958 was estimated using ice-core-based reconstructions. Global fallout deposition after 2010 was assumed to remain constant until 2030. MRI observations strongly influenced by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station accident after March 2011 were excluded from this dataset and treated separately. Deposition onto sea ice and subsequent supply to the ocean via ice melting were implicitly included through annual mean fluxes, whereas explicit inhibition effects of sea ice on deposition were not considered, as their contribution to the global inventory is assumed to be minor. This dataset provides a spatially and temporally consistent source term suitable for global ocean general circulation models and tracer-based studies of long-term 137Cs behavior in the global ocean.
