AbstractRiver networks regulate downstream discharge and solute contributions from spatially distinct source areas within a catchment. Yet concentration–discharge (C–Q) relationship assume continuous source accessibility, limiting prediction when networks expand, contract and rewet. In radioactively contaminated catchments, dissolved 137Cs and 90Sr still show episodic exceedances decades after deposition, testing this limitation. Here we show that phase-dependent river network connectivity reorganise which contaminated source areas are hydrologically accessible, producing distinct C–Q patterns even at comparable discharge. Using field observations from the Chernobyl catchment and network-scale flux comparisons, we distinguish three connectivity phases: fully connected, partially disconnected, and rewetting, and quantified phase-specific changes in tributary contributions. During rewetting, channel continuity returns before radionuclide fluxes recover uniformly, consistent with catchment memory delaying access to near-surface contaminant stores. Treating source accessibility as a state set by connectivity and memory enables phase-aware forecasting and monitoring of exceedance risk under increasingly variable hydroclimatic conditions. This dataset contains the event-based measurements of dissolved radionuclide concentrations used in this study.
