Diurnal regulation of SOS pathway and sodium excretion underlying salinity tolerance of Vigna marina

Overview

A research paper by a team consisting of Researcher Yusaku Noda from the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology, Senior Researcher Ken Naito from the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), Associate Professor Jun Furukawa from the University of Tsukuba, and Professor Keitaro Tanoi from the University of Tokyo has been published and jointly press released.  ※Press release (PDF 2.39MB)

This study elucidated the salt tolerance mechanism of Canavalia rosea, a wild relative of adzuki bean known for its exceptional resistance to salinity. The plant exhibits a high capacity to excrete sodium from its roots and forms a barrier that prevents sodium from entering the root system. Additionally, the sodium excretion was found to follow a diurnal rhythm—active during the day and inactive at night. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of salt-tolerant crops and may help address freshwater resource challenges.
