Field informationThe study site is located in the Institute of Nature Educationfs Kayanodaira beech forest in Shiga highland at Shinshu University, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (N 365019, E 138301: 1495 m a.s.l.). The mean annual precipitation is 1881 mm, and the mean annual temperature is 10.5 C (1981?2010). The ground is covered by snow each year from November to the following May, and the snow depth is usually 3?4 m. A permanent plot of 1 ha (KYD) was established in 2005. This site is one of the Japanese Ministry of the Environmentfs gMonitaring Sites 1000h. KYD is a cool-temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest. The dominant species are Fagus crenata (83.6% of basal area), Acer nipponicum (2.71%), and Hydrangea paniculata (1.24%) (2010). Tree census data for KYD1 was provided by the Ministry of the Environment Monitoring Sites 1000 Project (SIN01.zip, downloaded from http://www.biodic.go.jp/moni1000/findings/data/index.html).
