Prof.ONDA Laboratory

Center for Research in Isotopes and Environmental Dynamics, University of TSUKUBA: Depertment of Environmental Radionuclide Transfer

The second IAEA JAPAN PT (2013/04-05)

■Information about The 2nd IAEA JAPAN PT■
For this proficiency test, the IAEA standard samples will be prepared as follows.
First, the water, soil and hay will be prepared as representative environmental samples. The isotope sample which has been accurately quantified by the IAEA Seibersdorf laboratory will be mixed in these environmental samples.
In addition, it will contain samples of different concentrations and will be verified the measurement capability of each laboratories.

Table-1 Standard samples provided by IAEA
Sample Code Type of Sample Approx mass(g) Requested measurands
01 Spiked Water 500 Unknown anthropogenic isotopes amongst the following: 51Cr, 57Co, 60Co, 65Zn, 85Sr, 134Cs, 137Cs, 139Ce, 152Eu and 241Am (not all of them are present), total alpha and beta as screening parameters
02 Spiked Water 500
03 Spiked Water 500 QC sample with known radioisotopes and massic activities:
60Co: Value: 201,4 Bq/kg,
Uncertainty (k=1): 1,8 Bq/kg
137Cs: Value: 125,8 Bq/kg,
Uncertainty (k=1): 0,8 Bq/kg
04 Hay 150 134Cs and 137Cs
05 Soil 200 40K, 137Cs, 208Tl, 210Pb, 212Pb, 228Ac, 90Sr, 210Po, 238U, 239+240Pu and 241Am

■Participated Institutions and the further schedule■
This time, Japan's leading institution of 50 will participate in JAPAN PT.
Each institution must finish the measurement by May and send the result to IAEA. Following this, representatives of each institution and IAEA will gather at University of Tsukuba after June and IAEA will give us the technical guidance for the evaluation and improvement of the measured values.
The measured value of each institution will be anonymised. It is because the estimation of laboratories' reliability is not the purpose. The goal is to get more accurate measurement of environmental radioactivity by each institution.
IAEA will compile the results and creat reports.
